Defense contractor L3Harris Technologies announced plans to build a large solid rocket motor production campus at its Engineering, Manufacturing and Development (EMD) site in Camden, Arkansas. The company expects the $500 million investment to include over 20 buildings.

Adding 130,000 Square Feet

L3Harris said the new campus would add nearly 130,000 square feet of office and manufacturing space to the Camden site. The company noted that the additional facilities would increase its large solid rocket motor manufacturing capacity sixfold and feature program-agnostic equipment designed to scale production with demand.

L3Harris plans to start construction this year with production scheduled for 2027.

Supporting the “Golden Dome

CEO Christopher Kubasik stated that scaling large solid rocket motor production would support the U.S. Golden Dome program, a $175 billion missile defense concept proposed by President Donald Trump in May. Trump has said he expects the system to be “fully operational” by 2029.

100,000 Solid Rocket Motors Per Year

Aerojet Rocketdyne opened the EMD site in 2020 before L3Harris acquired the company in 2023. The location now manufactures over 100,000 solid rocket motors annually, from handheld models to units as large as small vehicles.

L3Harris also produces solid rocket motor cases in Alabama, and small solid rocket motors and gas generators in Virginia.
