What Is a RX-Type Gasket?

An RX-type gasket is a type of ring joint gasket (RJT), engineered for high-pressure sealing applications in industries such as oil & gas, petrochemicals, chemical processing, and power generation. These gaskets are typically made from metal, including stainless steel, carbon steel, Inconel®, Monel®, or other corrosion-resistant alloys, selected based on operating conditions and media compatibility. he RX gasket is a pressure-energized evolution of the standard R-type gasket, offering enhanced performance in dynamic environments. While it uses the same RTJ flange groove dimensions as standard R-type gaskets, the RX design includes a modified octagonal cross-section with pressure-activating geometry. This enables the gasket to form a progressively tighter seal as internal system pressure increases, reducing the risk of leakage under fluctuating or extreme pressure conditions. The “RX” designation refers specifically to this modified profile, which is compliant with specifications such as API 6A and ASME B16.20.
